Calvin's Corner # 2

I’m back with a new edition of Calvin’s corner – bringing you top tunes from the world of progressive house music. Since last time a lot has happened; Deep Dish, Lemon8, Kasey Taylor have been in Copenhagen, and Roskilde Festival 2003 brought a whole string of great DJs to Denmark including Darren Emerson, Hernán Cattáneo and Sander Kleinenberg. I’ve also been in London searching for vinyl and found some really nice things at e.g. Plastic Fantastic and at all the Virgin and HMV megastores – a true vinyl heaven – but my heart still belongs to 3beat – a fantastic service they provide keeping me up-to-date on all the latest tunes.

Let’s take a look back on what has been released over the last few months and a look into what the future brings of releases on vinyl.

On the RR1000 label U2´s “With Or Without You” has been pumped up in a Sultan & Miche remix – also available is a white label of the same track in another remix of a unknown origin, but both mixes works very well. Also out on RR1000 is the mix of Bjørk´s “Pegan Poetry” in the Infusion mix that Paul Oakenfold has used on his new compilation “Great Wall”. Speaking of the Australian group Infusion they are really a force to be reckoned with, they have released two 12” on Marine Parade label – “Starwater” and the new “Dead Souls”/”Troika”. On the remix front they have done a fantastic remake of Kate Bush “Running Up That Hill” out as an one-sided promo, remixed Cass “Kenjin” out on SAW, Buds Not Bombs “Deliedo” out on Baroque and Shiloh “Will I Ever” released on the new Electrofly label, just to name a few of the tracks in their amazing back catalogue these young Australians lads have made. Electrofly is a new progressive break-beat label that I stumbled upon when I was in London, here I listened to Jono Frenandez “Colours Of Conscience” a fantastic cooker.

If a beautiful progressive break beat track turns you on, then hurry and get Echofalls “Shiver” out on Cuba Recordings on the flip is a fabulous remix by Blue Haze. Blue Haze has also remixed Gazor “Overlight” out on Minimal and Gazor’s deep progressive track “Stabilized” is out on Confi-Dance (by the way Blue Haze aka. Michael Burns is part of Gazor). Northface´s “The Garden” is out in a limited promo of 100 on Mad Dog Music – a great female sexy progy cooker. From the Hybrid boys Mike and Chris comes the third single “True To Form” from their new album “Morning Sci-fi” featuring New Order’s Peter Hook including a fantastic John Creamer & Stephane K remix out on Distinctive Breaks. Also out on the same label is the new Way Out West tune “Muthaf***ka”, a strange mixture of the known sound of Way Out West, big beat and house music – not the best track from Jody and Nick Warren in my book – but I’m looking forward to the new album.

The mighty Fluke has returned with a new album “Puppy” and from this album two 12” have already been released. “Hang Tough” and “Switch/Twitch” – a perfect example that something good never disappear and that they stay true to their original sound. Technology brings us Kris B “Last Minute Flight” in a fine Blackwatch remix – the original was featured on Nick Warren´s Global Underground Reykjavik. As a promo for his new album “Bang” DJ Remy has released a 4 track EP on Combined Forces and it includes “Scrambled”, “Bang!”, “Dustsucker” and “X-rated”. The EP will soon be available as two 12” in the shops. James Holden has set up his own label Border Community and the first track is “A Break In The Clouds”. If the sound of James Holden is your cup of tea then check out Conceptual’s “Supernova” out on Fracas.  The forth Sabotage release is Cass’s “Hootinanny” and it features on the flip a deep and housy remix by Satoshi Tomiie of Cass´s “Mind Rewind” – don’t miss out on this track.
John Graham aka. Quivver has been busy, his Boz Boz label has already released three 12” and the latest is the collaboration between John Graham and Steve Porter “2 Days on Lansdown”. On Dave Seaman´s Audio Therapy label Ashland “Clear” is out on promo with remixes by Charlie May and Burufunk – tech-prog and breaks at it finest. On Kasey Taylor´s label Vapour comes at last the release of the Highland “No Way Out” track that Paul Oakenfold used on his “Another World” compilation in 2001. Also out on the same label is Chris Fraser “Kismet”. Max Graham is once more on the move with a driving mix of Subsky “Strawberry Fields” out as a white label on Release Records that also has released the new Powerplant “Overcast”. Depeche Mode front singer Dave Gahan has been busy on the club scene releasing his “Dirty Sticky Floors” in a Junkie XL and a Lexicon Avenue remix, and his latest “I Need You” in a Gabriel & Dresden remix all out on Mute.
A fantastic track “Corporate Entertainment” by Pindrop is out as a one-sided promo – get this before it’s gone, what magnificent track, full on with a driving melody line – Guy Ornadel is rumoured to be the person behind this track. Last time I hailed about Fitalic “Realistic” out on Vapour and I have to do it again – out on 19Box recordings they have released “Repriced” – what a track. On the Plastic Fantastic label Attica “Cyber Girl” is ready to rock in a Praha mix and two Mara mixes. Talking about Mara they are ready with their debut album and from this come the track “Tuning It On” out on ChooChoo as a double 12” release. On Chris Fortier´s Fade Records Dream Traveller “Structure” and Chirs Fortier´s own “Whateverthisis” is also released. From the Bedrock label a lot 12” have been released, latest are the two “Invasion” EP´s by Yunus Guvenen and Brancaccio & Aisher’s “Nighta Longa / Looks Like A Star”. Forthcoming is Morgan Page “All I know” and Christian Cambas “It Scares Me”.
That’s all from me this time – I will try and update this page more often with all the goodies. Keep on coming back and check out what is going on in the progressive world of music.  You can access the first edition of Calvin's corner here. Take care.  Calvin (Christian)
