Bermuda Triangle
consists of Jan-Tore Diesen, DJ Nils Noa and DJ Ariane. Jan-Tore Diesen is
a renowned producer. DJ Ariane is one of Scandinavia's leading female DJs
and DJ Nils Noa is said to be one of Norway's biggest DJ's having played
on BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix. Electronica makes up the basis of Bermuda
Triangle's music, but it is complimented by acoustic elements like drums,
flutes, bass, harp and vocals, both pop and opera.
Bermuda Triangle's debut track “Mooger Fooger” first got a release on
Norwegian label Planet Noise in 2001, and went unnoticed for some unknown
reason. A year later however, John Digweed decided to use it for his
“MMII” mix compilation. Later Hooj Choons signed it up for release on
their label. This drew the world’s attention not only to Bermuda Triangle,
but also the Planet Noise imprints itself.
Since then, the trio have been busy in the studio putting together their
debut artist album; also titled “Mooger Fooger”. This was released October
27th 2003. Rumours say that it took the band more than two years to finish
the album. The album has elements of trip hop, breakbeat, techno and even
easy listening. Another track from the album “Tay Do 22” was licensed to
the James Zabiela Hooj Choons compilation “Sound In Motion”. I talked to
the trio after they had performed at the Metropol Stage with extra 5
musicians on stage.

You have just played at the Metropol stage – how was it?
Nils: “It was great, after a while a very good vibe
and we enjoyed it.” Jan-Tore: “It was really amazing when the dark came
and you saw the lights and all the people – it was cool”. Ariane:
“Overwhelming – a really really good gig – I love the energy – It’s almost
surreal – amazing – really great.” |
How would you describe Bermuda Triangle music?
Jan-Tore: “A lot of melodies, soundscapes, very beat
orientated. What we are making right now we try to increase the energy and
add new instruments. We have just started using the guitar”. |
What are your different roles in the group?
Jan-Tore: “Well we started out as two DJs that I was
supposed to produce and after a while we became a group. I’m still doing
the basic musicianship and Nils and Ariana are doing a lot of editing,
effects and beat stuff”. |
The track “Mooger Fooger” was included on John Digweed's “MMII” mix
compilation, what has this meant for you?
Nils: “It was a good compliment and I have been a
fan of John Digweed since I’ve was 14 years old. It was a bit surreal and
a step future for us. When he plays our music other DJ´s begins looking
out for our music. James Zabiela also included a track on his compilation,
so it is helping us in getting recognised in a positive way. Jan-Tore:
“It’s like a tap on the shoulder – people accept you”. Ariane: “If it’s
good enough for John Digweed it has to be good enough for us”. |
 |
I understand that you are 8 persons on the stage – how dose that work?
Jan-Tore: “We do both improvisations and have some
strict materials. We also listen to each other, it is like a jazz group
sometimes – we know the basic structures of the tracks. We are really
lucky because all the musicians are among the best in Norway and they have
a specific style”. |
You are very secretive – on the cover we have these cartoons – what is the
idea behind this?
Jan-Tore: “It’s part of the record company’s concept.
They are a multi media company and they have a record company among other
projects. It’s like the Gorillaz – I’m Igor, Nils is Noa and Ariane is
Arta. It also helps us doing other projects we want to as long as we are
not Bermuda Triangle, Igor, Noa and Arta. I think it’s really cool”.
|
Nils - I understand that you also are a DJ in high demand - is your music style
different from Bermuda Triangle when you DJ?
Nils: “Yes – I’m booked out this summer going all over
world – It’s really nice. My style as a DJ is much harder than the music we
produce in Bermuda Triangle – a lot of break beats, techno house music – much
more minimal and lot of energy. I’m not just mixing but also live editing,
looping and scratching” |
