Nick Warren - Way out West
Nick Warren is one the best DJ’s to understand what
makes people dance, he can read the audience, his style is unique, he
mixes Breakbeats, Progressive House and Trance together in a way that will
blow your mind.
Nick Warren is a well known DJ and
Producer from Bristol, also known as one of the members of Way Out West. A
project that he started in 1994, when he met Jody
Wisternoff. They produced several tracks
together such as “Ajare” which
was in high demand among the
DJ’s around the world, before
they were signed to the record company, Deconstruction,
where they later released their debut album in 1996. The same year, the
single “The Gift” became an anthem worldwide and they also re-released
“Ajare” which found its way into the charts. With this success, Nicks DJ
career stepped up to a higher level and he became one of England’s super
DJ’s and he was now travelling all over the world playing in different
cities and venues. He also took resident in many of the wellknown clubs in
England such as Cream in Liverpool.
The Way Out West project also
became a remix outfit and has over the years produced some of the best
remixes in the progressive style, but their own music was put aside for a
long period until the start of year 2001, where they were ready to release
their second album and suddenly the troubles began.
Nick Warren
explains – We had finished the album and the first two singles “UB Devoid”
and “The Fall” were released. Also, promos of the album were already
printed and send out and the next single “Mind Circus” was lined up for
release as well, then suddenly we were dropped from our label,
Deconstruction. The reason – sales - I reckon – all the artist at
Deconstruction were evaluated and we were in the beginning chosen to stay
onboard Deconstruction, when it came under BMG’s wings. But then they
changed their mind and dropped us and now they also own the rights to the
album, so now we have to pay them 10% of the revenue.
After the
split with Deconstruction, Way Out West were signed to Distinctive Records
which also include Hybrid on their roster. I think that was a great move.
- Yes, we are now signed on
Distinctive Records and we are very happy with that decision, they are
great and they give us a lot of support, so we are looking forward to
release the album in August, finally.
One of my
all-time favourites is “Ajare” – tell me a little about that, any plans
for a re-release?
- Actually the “Ajare” track has
been reconstructed and given a new sound and we are going to play it in
our live set – I don’t know if we are going to release it, perhaps as a
promo for the DJ’s.
You have
over the years been very busy doing mix compilations; do you see them as
snapshots of music in time?
- Yes, the mix compilation albums
I had been doing are like snapshots of the music I like at the very moment
it is being put together. Therefore you can also hear the progression in
my music style, if you go back to some of the earlier Global Underground
releases that I have done.
Finally,
tell me how you started as a DJ?
- I started as a DJ back in
Bristol, where I played around in the smaller clubs – at one time I was
offered a job at a new club called Vision, which was back in 1990 and
there I met the group Massive Attack. They invited me to go on tour with
them as their official DJ. Later I was introduced to the Massive Attack
remixing team and there it all began.
Way Out West has released their
album “Intensify” and three singles form the album “Intensify”, “Mind
Circus” and “Stealth” incl. the brilliant remix by Quivver. Way Out West
has also released a long string of remixes, e.g. Lutral “Broken” and
Sunscreem “Perfect Motion” just to name a few.
