Paul Van Dyk goes global |
|
|
|
The year 2003 is going be a PvD year. A DVD, a
soundtrack, a compilation of remixes and a new album are so far on the
agenda of 2003. Clubbing Magazine had the opportunity to listen and view
some of the stuff and talked to Paul Van Dyk about what to expect. “The
soundtrack is out on the 26th of January and the DVD is
finished and is going to be released on the 10th of February
and I’m working on a new album, with the first single
coming out in the end of February beginning of Marts and a release of the
album in September” he explains. |

The PVD DVD |
|
|
The “Global” DVD features 13 tracks spanning 10
years of Paul Van Dyk’s work. “It’s the 12 most important tracks of the
last 10 years and a new track.” Paul indicates. All the tracks are
reworked in 5.1. surround sound mix. The tracks are accompanied by a
visual trip around the world travelling with Paul Van Dyk, giving us a
peek into the world of a super DJ. Destinations such as New York, Los
Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Mexico City, Tokyo, Bangkok, Seoul,
Turweston, Berlin, Ibiza and venues and events such as Vandit Night, Love
Parade, Christopher Street Day, Gatecrasher Sound System, Amnesia and more
are covered in the 76 minutes long video mix giving a fantastic look into
the clubbing culture around the world, mixing a crisp and colourful image
of life, people, nature, buildings, streets, clubbers and venues around
the world all pulled together in one universal language – the music of
Paul Van Dyk. “I had a camera crew travelling with me for 7-8 months
and it turned out much more like a presentation of the soul of the global
youth culture, with my music underneath and it’s very intense. I hope that
people give it a chance and try to understand what it actually means and
what is going on in the world around that music.” Paul emphasise.
Sound wise you can choose between a Dolby
Digtal track and a Stereo track while looking at the movie with ambient
sounds or you can choose a superior DTS studio mix without visuals and
ambient sounds – that puts you in the middle of this fantastic ocean of
Paul Van Dyk sounds. “It’s all remixed in 5.1 surround sound and it’s a
complete new experience. When I actually did the remixes I still tried
having it sound like the original sound, going back using the old sounds
so you get the feel of the original sense, but instead of just having it
stereo you are right in the middle of it and it’s an amazing way to
experience the music”. Paul goes on; “We try to create everything,
as you are in the middle of it. For example if you see a car passing by,
you hear the car passing by in spite of the music. It’s very well done and
it’s a new experience for me - it’s like making a movie“. |

Zurdo - the soundtrack |
|
|
 |
The soundtrack for the Mexican movie “Zurdo” is Paul
Van Dyk’s first time scoring an original soundtrack and its pure PVD. He has
done 11 fantastic tracks that as this time aren’t going to be released outside
Latin America. “It’s still the case; isn’t going to be released world wide.
The music is very close to the movie and I think it’s important that you have
the ability to watch the movie and that is not going to happen in Denmark or in
Germany".
Paul explains. I have to agree with Paul, when I listened to the soundtrack I
wished I could see the movie. It captures a sound of voices and tones that gives
a mystical feel to the music and transports you to the streets of Mexico.
Music
wise it’s when Paul Van Dyk is as his best. “Te Amo” is a marvellous piece of
music that builds up a great atmosphere. “Buenaventura” is an amazing uplifting
ride. “Animacion” is another fantastic track – full on with a nice piano part on
top. “In a way it’s one of those tracks when I play it out people really like
it – its one of the best tracks from the movie”, Paul explains. “Excitation”
starts out as a break beat track that slowly builds. “Santa Maria” has a
beautiful Ibiza feel over it and I can picture the setting sun. On the whole
experience Paul says; “It was very intense and therefore it was a very inspiring
thing to do”.
|
The Soundtrack consisted of the following tracks:
- The Game
- Te Amo
- Buenaventura
- La Fiesta De Las Canicas
- Escape
- Chupacabras
- Zurdo in Love
- Excitation
- Santa Maria
- Animacion
- Orto Dia
Total running time around 57 minutes.

The remix album and the forth album |
|
|
 |
The Second Level of “Vorsprung Dyk Technik”
is also in the making and will see its release on Deviant. So far no track list is
available, but it will collect the remixes of 1999-2002.
“We are
still working on it in terms of legal process and background. There is no
release date yet, but it will come out very soon. Doing a compilation like this
involves a lot of legal licensing, so it takes time”. Paul
indicates on the status of the album.
"45 RPM", "Seven Ways",
"Out There And Back" – the time has come
for his forth studio album. At the Okyo venue in Copenhagen last November he
played three amazing tracks from his forthcoming album and Paul told me; “I
have never been so happy recording the new stuff and this without any time
pressure; I can do whatever I want to do. There are a few vocal things on it,
some banging things and some tracks that are Paul Van Dyk pop music. I really
enjoy doing it. I have progressed and I make the music exactly the way I enjoy
listening to it”. On the question if he was collaborating with someone he
said yes, but he wouldn’t tell me whom and when I asked if it was BT he smiled
and said “Maybe something is coming up – let’s see”. The
first single from the upcoming album is going to be
the collaboration with Hemstock & Jennings ”Nothing But You”. |

On a closing node |
 |
|
Paul Van Dyk is doing a remix for the German band called
City. On releasing the Jose Amnesia “The Eternal” he told me “We still have
that on plan, it’s down to my time of doing a remix – I love it to death and
that is why I signed it, but I think there is no time pressure on it”. |
Paul
has also done the title track for the Australian movie "One
Perfect Day", set for release in Australia in
June.
