No doubt that the Dutch DJ Tiësto is one of the biggest DJ´s in world - DJ Magazine has even voted him number 1, two years in a row. His remix of Delerium featuring Sarah McLachlan – “The Silence” was a major hit for him and with this his DJ career was propelled into new heights. Over the years Tiësto has done many compilations, “Magik”, “In Search Of Sunrise”, “Revolution” and “Nyana”. In 2001 he released his first artist album “In My Memory” and in 2003 he performed for over 25.000 people in a big stadium. Today he is ready to release his second album “Just Be”. Clubbing Magaizne has talked to Tiësto about the new album
You have just released your new album “Just Be” – but it has been accessible on the Internet for some time now – how do feel about that?
- I don’t mind actually – It’s quite exciting that people are so excited to hear the album that they have to put it on the Internet – so everybody can listen to it. I think I owe my career to the Internet – in the past my music was very hard to get - but thanks to the Internet it got spread out. So I think it’s a great way to listen to the album and I don’t mind at all. If people really like the album they will buy it anyway.
So you are not afraid of loosing sales?
- No not at all – I think it is better – artists have to come up with quality music to sell. If people don’t like your album they don’t buy it and people who like it a little bit will download it. People who appreciate your music buy the album anyway.
You have been working with BT (Brian Transeau) on the track “Loves Comes Again” – how did the two of you hook up?
- It was really funny – I met BT at the Winter Music Conference in Miami and that time he had just released a single with a Way Out West remix and I said that he had a great vocal on it – I asked who the singer was – and he said actually that it was him. So I said let do a track together – I’ll do the music and you will do the singing.
Your new album “Just Be” what are your feelings about it?
- There is so much of the same coming out – I get a little bored of it and what I try to do is to make new trance sounds, try to dare different sounds and also when I play music, try to play something else, trance is great but it sounds even better if you put a techno track in between to give the people something else and then come back with a nice melody – mix it up a little more because this is the future of dance music anyway. But trance will always be there – it would never die. The shape of it will change and now a days with computers so many people can make and produce trance music, so it has to be special to separate yourself, and that is the biggest challenge I have at the moment – try to separate yourself from the others.
What are your feelings of the trance that is released today?
- There is so much of the same coming out – I get a little bored of it and what I try to do is to make new trance sounds, try to dare different sounds and also when I play music, try to play something else, trance is great but it sounds even better if you put a techno track in between to give the people something else and then come back with a nice melody – mix it up a lilted more because this is the future of dance music anyway. But trance will always be there – it would never die. The shape of it will change and now a days with computers so many people can make and produce trance music, so it has to be special to separate yourself, and that is the biggest challenge I have at the moment – try to separate yourself from the others.
What about the music styles– how do the see the future of the scene?
- It’s all coming together – you have already seen some of the trance DJ´s start to play techno tracks as well and do other stuff. Trance by itself is not enough anymore – for people as well - when they go out – it’s like food, sometimes you want to have a piece of meat and sometimes you want fish – and it is the same with music – specially with trance music. If you hear the same riffs all the time – you go “come on”!!! - There is a future in mixing everything up – and not just get stuck in the past.
